How To - Pick the Perfect Dog to Train Easily

When you have decided that you would like a pet dog you would naturally like to find one that will be a best friend to you, but you also want one that can be trained easily. When you are in the process of dog training whether it's a Doberman, King Charles Spaniel or a Labrador it needs to be trained, because it will make your life much easier when you are in the process of house breaking it and teaching it some good manners. A dog that is stubborn can pose some difficulties in training, but they can be trained by an expert dog trainer. However, if you are new to dog training, you will need to find a dog that is going to be easy to train but it doesn't need to be up to Show Dog standards. When searching for this type of dog, there are some things that you should look for in its disposition, breed and age.

What Personality Trait

Experienced trainers will tell you that a dog with a calm and relaxed personality is quite a bit amenable to train. Although, it may be easier to hold this type of dog's attention, an energetic, hyperactive dog can also be easily trained if you have some patience. The key is to find a dog that will bond with you, because once you have formed a bond with a dog, it will happily do anything to try and please you. A dog that has bonded to its owner is the easiest to train, regardless of whether it is hyperactive, placid, dominant or submissive.

A submissive dog will usually display fewer challenges during training than a dominant aggressive dog and sometimes a good way to check to see if your pet is submissive, is to stare him in the eyes. If the dog looks away and averts your stare that usually indicates submission. Try this tactic with small dogs and puppies. Hold the dog with its belly upwards. A dog with a submissive tendency will remain in that belly prone position and a dog with a dominant personality will probably try to turn over straight away.

Which Breed To Choose?

The choice of dog breeds is huge - Poodle, Bulldog, Boarder Collie, Dalmatian etc. Just to name just a few because the list goes on and on. It may also be an idea to consider a reliable and intelligent common mongrel.

Various breeds are known to be easier to train than others, Alsatians and Retrievers for example are very popular because they are so amenable and simple to train. Labrador training is also easy because these dogs are known to want to please their owners.

Some of the bull dog breeds are very intelligent animals and will be faithful and true forever. This list also includes American bulldogs and English bulldogs. Corgis, Belgian shepherds, German shepherds and Dobermans are dogs that are considered easy to train and do well in dog training classes. It has been reported that the Terrier types are renowned for being harder to train, but it's not impossible and they can pick up new skills quickly, especially if they can see what's in it for them, such as offering them a tasty treat. As said previously, mixed breed and mongrel dogs can also make wonderful companions that are easy to train.

What Age Should I Choose?

Why not consider an older dog, one that has possibly been deserted by his owners purely because he was getting on in age. There is an old saying that "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" and some people believe that adult dogs cannot be trained, but this is completely untrue and many older adult dogs are capable of learning even faster than younger dogs and puppies. Adult dogs are a bit like people, they have a much better ability to concentrate and focus on learning because they are more relaxed and experienced. Puppies are like children with short concentration spans and easily distracted by their instinct to play and therefore it may be best that they go to a dog obedience school where they will enjoy the company of other puppies.

Older adult dogs can make wonderful pets, and they can learn new skills and be just as easy to train so please consider an older dog looking for a new home, perhaps you could choose one from one of your local dog rescue centres because these older dogs deserve a second chance.

When you have decided on dog ownership and you are ready to start looking for a dog, you will probably know very soon the one to choose because he will let you know that he is the ONE! When this happens it will be much easier to implement his training and remember that there are many dog courses and books available that give very good instruction to help you.
