Dogs Disease - How to Spot the Signs Part 9 SNAKE BITES

SNAKE BITES

Overview - As I said at the beginning of this book there is only one venomous snake in the UK but there are several in the areas of the Mediterranean and other countries. Dogs love to go running through undergrowth and because of their speed a snake can't always get out of the way quick enough and the resulting bite could prove serious or possibly fatal. There are too many types of snake to list here but one of the common snakes in Europe is the Adder/Viper. It is quite recognizable with the zig zag markings down its body and  it can grow to become quite long. Its bite can be very painful and can prove very dangerous to children and animals but as with most snakes, they are very shy and unless threatened they prefer to avoid confrontation.

Transmission - Venom and possibly a nasty bite.

Symptoms - This will depend on the type of snake but if you suspect the snake is venomous seek attention immediately.

Treatment - If you or your dog is bitten, then don't panic, try to keep calm and seek medical or veterinarian attention quickly where you or your dog will be administered anti-venom. Snakes go into hibernation during the colder months so you are only likely to come into contact with them during the spring and summer. Remember that bee and wasp stings kill more people than snakes.

Prevention - If you go walking in the countryside and spot one basking in the sunshine, try to keep you dog well away. Snakes are beautiful creatures but I know that many people have a real phobia about them. However, they don't set out to harm us and should therefore be left in peace.
