Dogs
Disease - How to Spot the Signs Part 7 LEISHMANIOSIS
LEISHMANIOSIS
Overview
- Another non contagious disease you have probably never heard of
and once again it's the Mosquito who is the culprit. Some call this
particular mosquito a "sand fly" but this is very
misleading because this can imply that they live near the beaches but
these mosquitoes are not just by the coast and can live quite happily
further inland and is very common in the areas of the Mediterranean.
Transmission
- The mosquito is active mainly between dusk and dawn and many
people call them "no see ums" because they are so tiny but
they can give a nasty bite that cannot be felt initially and some
people can react quite badly to the bite and the affected area can
become swollen and extremely itchy. When my dogs have been bitten the
irritation must have been just as severe by the way they have
reacted. The mosquito feasts on the blood from their unsuspecting
host and this is how they pass on the parasite that inflicts the damage.
Symptoms
- A very nasty chronic disease with an incubation period of months,
even years. It attacks the immune system and if the disease takes
hold it can be fatal. Some of the dogs signs are a loss of weight,
lethargy and diarrhea. Also, ulcers that develop and cause bald
patches around the eyes, nose and ears and can give a distinctive
appearance. The dog suffers from exhaustion due to chronic heart problems.
Treatment
- There is no cure as such but a dog can survive and live a normal
life span provided they take regular prescribed dogs medication.
Prevention
- It's vital that specialist collars are worn at all times and
additional care if the dog spends its life outdoors because they are
vary vulnerable. Annual blood tests are also recommended. Again, your
get your dog to the Vets for early so that preventative measures to
be taken.
