Dogs
Disease - How to Spot the Signs Part 6 DOGS LYME DISEASE (Borreliose)
DOGS
LYME DISEASE (Borreliose)
Overview
- The culprit again for spreading this disease is the Tick and can
also affect humans as well as dogs. The ticks ingest the bacteria
that cause the disease from the blood of infected animals
Transmission
- Once the tick has found its victim it starts to latch onto the
skin by biting and then starts sucking blood and at the same time
emitting the bacteria that cause the disease. Once the tick is fully
engorged with blood it will drop off the animal until it is ready for
its next meal and so the cycle continues.
Symptoms
- Around the site where the tick has bitten begins to become red and
very inflamed and is accompanied by flu like symptoms including
swollen glands and as the disease progresses it can produce many
abnormalities including motor and sensory nerve damage causing dogs
seizures and arthritis. Changes in the texture of the fur and skin
can be seen.
Treatment
- The Vet will use antibiotics and the type used will depend on how
far the disease has progressed and to help with the symptoms pain
relief will be given.
Prevention
- Again, it's vital that preventative steps are taken. Use
specialist collars and sprays to keep the ticks away. If you do find
any then remove them immediately and destroy.

"If
you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the
shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal
likewise with their fellow men."

Francis of Assisi
