EHRLICHIOSE
Overview
- Most people have never heard of this dogs disease let alone to be
able to pronounce it! However, this is a parasitic disease and the
culprit is the Tick and this disease is deadly. The disease is
widespread in the Mediterranean and other European countries and also
North and South America. In my personal experience I have found that
ticks are more prevalent certain times of the year, mainly spring and
autumn but prevention is needed at all times. Check you dog regularly
and particularly when you have been walking through fields as this is
where the little things lurk awaiting their next victim. When you
first see them they may appear to be tiny black spiders but they seem
to crawl around like crabs.
Transmission
- Is via the bite of the Tick who transfers bacteria into the dog's
blood stream where it attacks the white blood cells, impairing the
immune system resulting in anemia and blood clotting and they then
move onto the lymphatic glands to cause havoc.
Symptoms
- Can be acute, starting with a fever, loss of appetite and nose
bleeds and blisters leaving the poor dog feeling wretched. Few dogs
survive this first phase but all depends on the dog's immune system.
Treatment
- Is via antibiotic injections and iron supplements if anemia is a symptom.
Prevention
- It is vital that you use collars and sprays specifically designed
to kill and prevent ticks from latching on to the dog. If you do find
some that have attached themselves then remove them straight away as
it helps prevent the disease.

in case the need should arise for them to bark violently at
nothing right in your ear" Dave Barry
