Overview
- A nasty but preventable disease if the advice is sought from a Vet
as soon as you arrive in your new country or acquire a new dog.
The Mosquito is responsible for this disease and acts as the
intermediate host of the larval worm. The mosquito ingests the worm
when it injects an animal and then passes it on to another animal
when it wants more blood. Once inside the animal (your dog) it goes
through changes to become an adult worm and then it makes its way to
the heart where it will wait for its opportunity to reproduce.
Heartworm
transmission - The mosquito ingests the worm when it bites an animal
and then passes it on to another animal when it wants more blood.
Once inside the animal (your dog) it goes through changes to become
an adult worm and then it makes its way to the heart where it will
wait for its opportunity to reproduce. Once this has been
accomplished the larval worms then get into the blood circulation
where they get passed on to the next mosquito that is looking for
more blood and in turn continue to spread the disease and the life
cycle is set in motion.
Symptoms
- Unfortunately, symptoms may not show themselves for up to a year
after the infection and possible early signs could be a faint cough
that may not even be noticed. Overtime and as the disease progresses
the cough will get worse and the dog will show sign's of exhaustion
after any exercise and his breathing becomes labored and difficult
and he may start to cough up blood. He will also be starting to lose
weight as his condition deteriorates.
Treatment
- If a blood test is taken as soon as symptoms present themselves it
will confirm how far the disease has progressed and treatment can be
successful if the disease has not progresses too far. The Vet will
then administer appropriate medication to kill the dogs worms.
Prevention
- Early preventative measures by the Vet including tablets taken
every month and an annual injection.

"God
requires that we assist the animals, when they need our help. Each
being (human or creature) has the same right of protection." St.
Francis of Assisi
