Dogs Disease - How to Spot the Signs Part 1 INTRODUCTION

Picture of baby Ubee soon after we found her and after her first bath

This book is dedicated to my two beautiful dogs Bobby and Ubee who were both unwanted by their previous owners. Little Ubee had been dumped and left to fend for herself in the middle of nowhere without food or water. Bobby was unwanted because when his previous owners acquired him as a pup they thought he was going to be a pedigree but in fact he turned out to be a common mongrel, so they decided he wasn't good enough and didn't want him. Their loss!

This book is intended to give a brief description of particular dogs diseases that can occur when people move to different countries and are completely unaware of the threats that face their pets. If you take your dog abroad or if indeed you acquire a dog unexpectedly when you arrive in your new country, like we did, I hope this information helps you to spot the symptoms of dog's illnesses and thus preventing your best friend from becoming ill.

Perhaps you have no experience of dog ownership and wouldn't recognise the tell tale signs that say all is not well so it's advisable to consult a local vet as soon as possible and they will ensure your dogs treatment is correctly administered and that your dog is immunised and protected. Most of the dogs diseases and other threats listed in this book are common in many countries but I have concentrated on the countries around the Mediterranean. I have lived in southern Spain for many years and the information in this book is intended to give an insight into the symptoms of possible illness and disease. It has been gained from my own experiences as a dog owner and some has been sourced from various public domain animal health and veterinarian encyclopaedias and discussions with animal welfare organisations.

Many people decide to move to different countries for all sorts of different reasons, better work opportunities or perhaps to retire to and get some long overdue sunshine. Many decide to take their beloved dog with them and quite unaware of the threats that face their pet when they arrive and settle in their new home.

Some come from England and other northern European countries where there are diseases that can strike a dog down but most people are aware of them. A lot of people acquire a dog for the first time in their lives when they arrive because very often there are many abandoned dogs around and they have never had any experience of dog illnesses and would not know what to look out for. To make things more difficult, they may not yet be able to speak or understand the language and communication can be a barrier when they arrive in their new country. So, when they discover some of the possible dog illnesses that can strike they come as a bit of a shock, and sometimes unfortunately, it's too late.

For example, there's one dogs disease called Leishmaniosis and is the result of a mosquito infecting the dog with a parasite. It's very common in the warm Mediterranean areas and also occurs in many other countries including Middle America. It can be a chronic disease which has an incubation period of months, even years but more about this later.

Other threats for instance, there is only one poisonous snake in Britain and it's the Adder/Viper. In the Mediterranean there are several venomous snakes and one needs to be able learn to recognise them and know their preferred habitat. At least then if you want to take your dog for long walks you are more likely to spot the type of terrain snakes prefer to live in and avoid those areas. Remember though, that snakes are very shy creatures and will avoid you at all costs, so they are unlikely to leap out at you. It's your dog that is most likely to disturb one and get bitten because the snake can't get out of the way quick enough.

Happy buddies Bobby & Baby Ubee
