FLEAS
Overview
- These cheeky chaps can be a real problem for dogs and indeed cats.
They are very prolific in warmer climates and can produce offspring
at a rate of knots and it doesn't take long to have a very serious
infestation in your home. For the fleas to survive they need the
blood of a nice warm victim, preferably furry. They have an
amazing capacity for jumping massive heights in comparison with their
tiny size and can easily jump up onto their next meal.
Transmission
- Jumping from host to host
Symptoms
- Normally the only symptom is extreme itching and the area that has
been bitten can become red raw from scratching. An allergic reaction
can sometimes occur causing nasty sores so keep an eye out for what
looks like small bits of black grit because this is the flea's
excrement. This is always a tell tale sign.
Treatment
- There are several very good products available, including collars,
powders, sprays and shampoos that all work to combat and defeat the
different stages of the flea's life cycle. Care should be taken when
vacuuming the floors to make sure all the nooks and crannies are also
cleaned and the bag emptied and burned when finished. The dogs
bedding and household furniture also need to be washed and treated.
If all this effort fails to rid you of these little critters, then
you may have to get professional help in to irradicate them.
Prevention
- As in treatment, and be on the lookout for the tell tale signs,
which is continuous scratching. Check your home and animals regularly
for them.
