DISTEMPER
Overview
-This disease is very contagious and often fatal. The disease is
caused by a virus and attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal and
then the central nervous system. It occurs worldwide and in some
countries widespread vaccination programs have greatly reduced the
occurrence of this disease.
Distemper
transmission - is caused mainly by an airborne virus that the dogs
breathe in and once infected they spread the virus through bodily
excretions and secretions, particularly respiratory secretions.
Symptoms
- Depending on the strain of virus and also the dog's immune system,
early symptoms will include signs such as loss of appetite, fever and
eye inflammation. As the disease progresses then eye and nose
discharges, coughing, vomiting and diarrhea. These are just some of
the symptoms and it's vital to get a quick diagnosis and treatment
from the Vet as soon as possible.
Treatment
- There is no cure for this disease and the dogs own immune system
has to be supported by the Vet to defeat it.
Prevention
- Vaccination as soon as possible.
