PARVOVIRUS
Overview
- Very unpleasant disease for dogs also known as Canine Parvovirus.
There are two types of Parvo that affect dogs, the first being
Intestinal, which is the most common, the other is Cardiac Parvo,
Just as deadly. It's a disease that is highly contagious and can be
lethal for young dogs and puppies because they have not yet had the
time to built up a strong immune system.
Pavovirus
transmission - It has been said that this is not an airborne disease
and that the virus is picked up from the excrement of infected dogs
and this virus can survive for very long periods of time. So, all it
takes is for another dog or other animal to step in it and it's then
quickly spread all over the place. They say that the only effective
way to clean and disinfect all the contaminated areas is with
chlorine bleach, including food and water bowls and any other areas
the dog would have had contact with.
Symptoms
- The dog will be lethargic with a loss of appetite, diarrhea and
vomiting. It's vital to get him to the Vets immediately.
Treatment
- A quick diagnosis by your Vet is vital for a chance of survival as
there is no real cure for Pavo virus and much is dependent on the
skill and dedication of the Vet , who will try to stabilize the
symptoms and support the dog's immune system to help him pull
through. It has been said that puppies fighting this disease have a
50-50 chance of survival if they get quick supportive treatment.
Prevention
- Have your dog vaccinated as soon as possible and continue with
booster injections.
